Today, there is a great, fresh musical YouTube video by Bellingham songwriter Tracy Spring that is being shared about on Facebook. 

It’s a wonderful performance.  I took a stab at transcribing the lyrics but have had the good fortune that Tracy Spring provided her original lyrics for the piece!

It seemed like a good idea at the time, to drill those wells and dig those mines
For coal, oil, gas and steam…all aboard, the American Dream!

Couldn’t leave it in the ground, couldn’t leave it in the ground
America had mouths to feed, there was profit, there was greed.  No restraint, there was no need…
And we couldn’t just leave it in the ground, in the ground, we couldn’t just leave it in the ground.

Now there’s tankers and pipelines spillin’ oil. We fight for it on foreign soil.
Fracking, coal ports, deals overseas…railroading our communities

Leave it in the ground, just leave it in the ground
Rethink what we think we need, say Hell NO to corporate greed, invest in green energy…
And leave the rest in the ground, in the ground, leave the rest in the ground.

I’ll live as lightly as I can, how far to go is in my hands
I do it for the Earth, my home… and the children…the children…the children’s, children’s children not yet born!

Better leave it in the ground, just leave it in the ground
Rethink what I think we need, say Hell NO to complacency, invest in green energy…
And leave the rest in the ground, in the ground, leave the rest in the ground.

Now some say it can’t be done, that without it this world cannot run
Geothermal, wind and sun… will make it work for everyone. Let the rule of fossil fuel BE DONE
and ALSO… U-RAN-I-UM!!!!!!!
