In listening to part of the audio recording of the County Council Special Committee of the Whole (SCOTW) meeting held Tuesday, July 9, 2019, Council member Barbara Brenner made a motion to remove a proposed code amendment which would prohibit additional fossil fuel refineries at Cherry Point. Council member Satpal Sidhu seconded that motion, and then there was a discussion by the Council. The code amendment pertains to Whatcom County Code, and would be to address the County’s Comprehensive Plan policy specific to Cherry Point.

On Monday, July 15, 2019, Bellingham City Council’s Justice Committee met in Council Chambers at City Hall, with their one focus being, “Deliberation Regarding Work-Plan Items Related to Immigration.”  I will work on publishing notes on this meeting soon. But first, I did want to draw people’s attention to a particular statement of City Council Member April Barker’s at that meeting. Council Member Barker serves on the Justice Committee, with Council Member Pinky Vargas, along with Council Member and Justice Committee Chair Hannah Stone.

While many in Whatcom County are focusing on the City of Bellingham mayoral race, some other election races appear to be getting largely ignored. I think the most important election race this year is the one for Whatcom County Executive, so I want to put some attention today on this very important race by posting this information. There are four candidates running for County Executive: Democratic candidates Karen Burke, Satpal Sidhu, and Jim Boyle, and conservative candidate, Tony Larson.

There is one Democratic candidate listed on the primary ballot in this At-Large position race, Carol Frazey, and I believe she is definitely the best choice. There are also three conservative candidates listed on the ballot: Brett Bonner, Bill LaFreniere, and David Ramirez.
