The Cow Beach project is full of manure. The city continues to assert that wildlife, habitat, people, pets and recreation are all compatible uses throughout the waterfront, finding consultants who reach conclusions that contradict Best Available Science. Some of the greatest damage is done through impacts to forage fish, which form the lynchpin of the aquatic food web on the Pacific coast. Continue reading

How The Waterfront Is Really Being Sold / Facebook post, Whatcom Hawk

Well, the city and port propaganda machine is in full swing selling the public on the waterfront deal and how everything about it is going to be so great, great, great..from the sale to Harcourt, to the clean-ups, the demolition of historic structures, and of course, public access, which in Bellingham somehow increases habitat function. (Hooray for the Camelot that is Bellingham.) Continue reading

What Is An “Intensity of Use” Impact? And Why Should I Care? / Facebook post, Whatcom Hawk

An intensity of use impact is generally used to refer to disruption of wildlife from human presence, activities and land use. The greater the intensity of use, the more humans present, the more disruption to normal wildlife behavior, and the more likely there will be loss of biodiversity because many animals will naturally avoid areas with humans and pets. CHICKEN RACE

Enlightened Bellingham still thinks it is amusing to take animals into strange noisy environments and have them engage in meaningless acts, purely for the purpose of human amusement. It is all good fun, a “friendly gathering of chicken owners”, … just ask the sponsor, Scratch and Peck Feeds. Continue reading

But it is hard not to end up totally disgusted with COB… / Facebook Post, Whatcom Hawk

Guys, I try. I really do. But it is hard not to end up totally disgusted with COB, especially anytime they engage in “habitat restoration”.. i.e, fish projects.

I have been a big critic of fish restoration projects because too often, they are only intended to benefit the fish, ignoring the reason that fish bearing streams have been so important for biodiversity.. Continue reading

Privatizing Our Public Places: Not Here, Not Today / The Daily Kos, James Wells

Sat Jun 27, 2015  James Wells

Our local Bloedel Donovan Park is a great wonder. All kinds of people come from all over for a picnic, or a swim, or to play ball.

Recently, a piece of our park was swallowed up by a rowing club, under some agreement with the parks department. An area of public parking was replaced by a locked boathouse, available only to members of the association. But don’t worry, your family can join – for only $400 per year.    Continue reading

Not Happy With City Public Notice, Related Information and Materials / FB Post, Whatcom Hawk

whatcom hawkYesterday at 3:44pm June 25, 2015  Wendy Harris

The city [of Bellingham] has been getting very sloppy with its public documents, failing to having appropriate documents related to hearings or work sessions available, or available in adequate time before a public hearing.

At the last planning commission work session for the CAO, the city cited the final habitat restoration plan, but it was not available for public review and I have yet to see a copy. Continue reading
