Letter to Whatcom County Council regarding renewable energy projects at Xwe’chi’eXen/Cherry Point / Noisy Waters Northwest
February 12, 2020 Dena Jensen
Just over two weeks ago, on January 28, 2020, the Whatcom County Council held their regular meeting which happened to last nearly 5 hours that night. I just finished listening to the whole meeting yesterday, February 11, (the date of their most recent meeting.) One of the last things Council Members did before adjourning that night was to pass Resolution 2020-004, “Supporting environmentally friendly renewable energy projects.” The resolution was proposed by Council Member Tyler Byrd, and passed with a 7-0 vote by the full Council.
Whatcom Business Alliance’s new ‘project’ to protect Cherry Point refineries’ ability to expand fossil fuel operations / Noisy Waters Northwest
December 13, 2019 Dena Jensen
This month, folks may have been seeing sponsored Facebook ads for the Whatcom Coalition for Economic Growth. This is a fairly new “project” of the Whatcom Business Alliance that seems to be putting on a full court press during this time that the Whatcom County Planning Commission is reviewing the Cherry Point Amendments. This WBA effort is not unlike Cascade Natural Gas’s misinformation campaign regarding the Climate Action Plan Task Force.

Tony Larson and the Business and Commerce Committee campaign against Cherry Point amendments / Noisy Waters Northwest
November 14, 2019 Dena Jensen
It is surely fitting for protectors of Native American treaty rights and the Salish Sea to be enjoying a collective sigh of relief due to the defeat of Tony Larson’s 2019 campaign to become Whatcom County Executive. The particular disaster of a man becoming County Executive, who had championed a proposed coal terminal project at Xwe’chi’eXen that was in opposition to the wishes and treaty rights of Lummi Nation, was averted. November 2, 2019 Sandy Robson
Currently, Tony Larson is running for Whatcom County Executive against Satpal Sidhu. A political action committee (PAC) named the “Coalition For a Better Northwest Washington,” was recently formed to support Larson’s candidacy, and to oppose Satpal Sidhu’s candidacy. Continue reading

This is for folks who have a continuing interest in the evolution of the Business and Commerce Advisory Committee that was recently formed and appointed by the Whatcom County Council: Continue reading
December 4th Special Committee of the Whole: Cherry Point Industries got to have their say; other Cherry Point stakeholders did not / Noisy Waters Northwest
December 6, 2018 Dena Jensen
Remember the discussion a few months back (I have one post on my blog from around May where this was discussed in a County Council committee meeting, and I think there have been others since) when there was a lot of pressure, especially from County Council Member Tyler Byrd, to let Cherry Point Industries give additional input over and above all the comments and letters they have presented to Council over the last couple years? Continue reading
Less threats to the Salish Sea, Xwe’chi’eXen, and our community: the 2018 proposed Whatcom County Cherry Point Amendments / Noisy Waters Northwest
November 30, 2018 Dena Jensen
Public comment, most consistently from union members and refinery employees, has continued to trickle in, a few per meeting, on an ongoing basis for the last few months, regarding the Whatcom County Council’s work on amending the Whatcom County Comprehensive Plan related to Cherry Point. It’s time to freshly-inform ourselves on the County Council’s process in this regard to make sure they have support for what they have done well, and have our calls to action for what we want them to do better. Fire Doug #16 / Noisy Waters Northwest
September 10, 2018 Dena Jensen
16 posts and what do you get? Another powerful reason that Doug’s Got to Go. Back in February of 2011 Republican State Senator Doug Ericksen wrote this letter, cheerily supporting the Gateway Pacific Terminal, to the those who were then members of the Whatcom County Council. Continue reading
Fire Doug #6 / Facebook post, Noisy Waters Northwest
August 31, 2018 Dena Jensen
The Day 6 Doug’s Got to Go post shows Republican Senator Doug Ericksen has consistently been fighting for years to promote more carbon producing projects while fighting against measures that would initiate state-wide steps to discourage the use of fossil fuels. Continue reading
