Bellingham, Washington — The youth of Bellingham and its surrounding area, led by Sunrise Movement Bellingham’s middle and high school team, are demanding that President Biden and Governor Inslee declare Climate Emergencies on both the state and federal levels. This declaration would acknowledge the need for action surrounding the Climate Crisis, and also hold these powerful people accountable for taking definitive steps to reverse the effects of climate change.

Bellingham, WA — The Sunrise Movement, which includes the Sunrise Bellingham Hub, is demanding a Green New Deal that guarantees a good job fighting climate change and making a safer, healthier society to anyone who wants one. We are calling on Senator Murray, Senator Cantwell, and Representative Larsen to take the Good Jobs for All Pledge. The pledge is a commitment to invest $10 trillion to create at least 15 million good jobs over the next decade, with 50% of funds going to communities on the frontlines of our economic, environmental, and public health crises. When we say “good jobs” we mean jobs with safe workplaces, family-sustaining wages and benefits, and protection of workers’ rights to organize.

When I received a response email from Bellingham City Council Member Michael Lilliquist today, I had to think hard about whether or not I should publicly remark on it. It’s not like it was, in many ways, remarkable in comparison to the few other email responses I have received from him. In fact, some Bellingham City Council Members do not respond to me – ever – regarding my emails asking them to reach out and develop relationships with frontline and marginalized community members. Most of the time, I don’t even expect them to email me back. I just want them to take action.

The Day 6 Doug’s Got to Go post shows Republican Senator Doug Ericksen has consistently been fighting for years to promote more carbon producing projects while fighting against measures that would initiate state-wide steps to discourage the use of fossil fuels. Continue reading →
I have been reading through the comments posted on the Cherry Point Amendments page of the Whatcom County website. In light of the comments made by Cherry Point refinery employees and contractors who emphasized their efforts to maintain safety as a priority in their workplace, I wanted to offer some additional information to consider that is not strongly represented yet in the comments to date. Dear City Council Members,
It is my understanding from reading The Northern Light that you received a letter from BNSF Railway urging you to refrain from voting to outlaw shipments of oil and coal by rail because such a measure is “unenforceable under federal law and costly for taxpayers”. Before deciding that you must do as BNSF says, I ask that you please consider the following information: Continue reading →
Have the elected representatives of the Whatcom County Council witnessed the current conflagration in Canada? The firestorms in Alberta fueled by the tinder of boreal forest have forced the evacuation of 80,000 people and may consume the city they have fled. Continue reading →
I had planned to write something else for my blog post today, but decided after participating in today’s Climate March that I needed to write about this instead.
