On Tuesday, January 30, 2018, now that new Council Members are officially sworn in, the Whatcom County Council’s Finance and Administrative Services Committee (freshly composed of Council Members Rud Browne, Tyler Byrd, and Satpal Sidhu) and Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee (which now is served on by Council Members Barry Buchanan, Tyler Byrd, and Satpal Sidhu) will be discussing some issues related to urgently needed renovations of the Whatcom County Jail in downtown Bellingham.  The Council will then revisit, and potentially vote on, results of the earlier committee discussions at their evening meeting at 7 p.m. that night. Today, I was perusing the Public Disclosure Commission website reports filed recently by the Whatcom County Republican Party PAC (“Whatcom Republicans”). I noticed there were two Expenditure reports filed that showed the Whatcom Republicans paid $358.08 on October 9, 2017, and $214.08 on October 27, 2017, to Meridian High School.

Those two dates seemed to correlate with two events I remembered which were: the October 5, 2017 “County-wide Candidate Forum,” and the October 19, 2017 “Wake-Up Whatcom County Rally!” both held at Meridian High School.  Continue reading →

Legal Action Moves Forward Against Top Whatcom County Officials

Bellingham, WA- Community leader, Rosalinda Guillen, filed a lawsuit for over $230,000,000 on October 10, 2017 in Whatcom County Superior Court against Defendants, Sherriff Bill Elfo, County Prosecutor David McEachran, and County Executive Jack Louws, based on their unlawful actions in the 2015 election year. The lawsuit alleges that Louws, Elfo, and McEachran violated Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 42.17A by using county resources for their reelections and publishing a biased and deceptive mailer to registered voters. A joint campaign flyer paid for by the campaigns for four self-described “nonpartisan” candidates running for office in Whatcom County in the November general election, just arrived in voters’ mailboxes. The top of one side of the flyer reads: “Tired of Partisan politics? So are we.” The flip side of the flyer reads, in part: “We Don’t Want To Be Elected By A Political Party, We Want To Be Elected By The People.”

Today a sponsored Facebook ad came into my feed from candidate for Port of Bellingham Commission, Dan Robbins, via his “Vote Dan Robbins” campaign page.

Robbins is running against Port candidate Michael Shepard, whose background garnered him an endorsement by the Washington Conservation Voters, which supports environmentally responsible candidates who their organization expects to be environmental champions that will protect and restore Washington’s environment. Here’s my latest letter to the council regarding the need to renovate the existing jail facility now. It was sent to council@co.whatcom.wa.us, and copied to all the city councils, the County Executive, and the Sheriff. Keep writing and calling!
