Look what the “Whatcom Jail” pro-Jail Sales and Use Tax (Proposition 2017-6) Facebook page did to a photo taken during an anti-Jail Sales and Use Tax (Proposition 2015-1) rally, held back in October 2015, in front of the Whatcom County Courthouse.
“Whatcom Jail” Facebook page, which also appears to be affiliated with a 2017 PAC called “One Safe Jail,” posted an October 22, 2017, post on its page, featuring an altered photo which changed the words displayed on the October 2015 rally demonstrators’ Anti-Jail Sales and Use Tax Proposition 2015-1 signs, to instead, reflect Pro-Jail Sales and Use Tax Proposition 2017-6 messages.
The original photo that was altered was taken by local photographer Dan Brown. According to Dan Brown, the “Whatcom Jail” Facebook page did not obtain his permission to use his photo. Also, his name with his copyright appears to have been cropped out by someone. The photo also appears to have been mirrored.
This fraudulent action by “Whatcom Jail” is illustrative of the many shady activities associated with the proposed new jail and the Jail Sales and Use Tax that would fund the construction and operation of that new jail.
The “Whatcom Jail” Facebook page used to be the Facebook page for the 2015 pro-new jail campaign for Proposition 2015-1 which voters rejected in the November 2015 election. It had been affiliated with the 2015 pro-new jail PAC called “Citizens for a Humane and Safe Jail Now.”
Among the people who were falsely portrayed as pro-jail supporters in the photo are some of the strongest activists in our community who are in opposition to the proposed new Jail Sales and Use Tax (Proposition 2017-6).
