The group I believe, that Council Member Lilliquist is referring to, is the Homeless Strategies Workgroup. Council Member Barry Buchanan from the County’s side of the street organized that group. Stakeholders, several of us, attend that every two weeks. We take that issue very seriously and we want to come to a resolution on providing safe shelter for our most vulnerable neighbors. You know what everybody? The incumbent Sheriff is out in public making up stories about what it takes to be a Sheriff. 

The fact is and according to law – it takes getting elected. 

The buffoonery story about fighting 24 year old combatants is like saying that I want to be called the romanticized “Sheriff of Boon County”. I have no desire to be that kind of Sheriff. I will be a sheriff who works differently in the 21st Century.

Here’s a quick recap of some key information regarding Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo who is seeking reelection this year.

Sheriff Elfo supported Minutemen in 2005

In 2005, Sheriff Bill Elfo affirmed his support of the Minutemen vigilante group, which had formed around that time and was associated with the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. This was in response to publicity about people entering Arizona illegally. That year about 100 Minutemen volunteers were recruited here in Washington State.

On August 20, 2019, Whatcom County Council Member Rud Browne made a Facebook post announcing that County Council Members “unanimously” endorse Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo. That’s his right, but sad that he had to depict it with the initial appearance that Council Members somehow voted to do so. He indicates in a footnote, however, that they did not.

Worthy of honor and respect: the 2019 Farmworker March for Dignity / Noisy Waters Northwest

It’s been held for years. I have been to four. This year was the second time I’ve marched the full route. The annual Farmworker March for Dignity starts at dawn, with many people leaving their home destinations around 4:00 a.m., in carpools or individually, to arrive at shuttle locations and park their vehicles.

Annual Farmworker March Spotlights Worker Violations at Crystal View Farms

Farmworker March for Dignity

When: Sunday, August 4, 2019 4:30 a.m

Starting point: 1431 Sunset Ave. Ferndale, WA

BELLINGHAM, WA August 2, 2019 – This Sunday, hundreds of people will march 14 miles through rural roads of Whatcom County for the annual Farmworker March for Dignity, organized by Community to Community Development (C2C) and Familias Unidas por la Justicia. The march kicks off at dawn, the average time a Farmworker begins working in the field. Leaders from C2C, Familias Unidas por la Justicia (FUJ), and Cooperativa Tierra y Libertad will start the march at a Customs and Border Patrol station, the site of border militarization, detention and deportation impacting Farmworkers families in the region.
