More destruction of the irreplaceable Semiahmoo Spit / Facebook post, Whatcom Hawk, Wendy Harris

One of the saddest and stupidest planning decisions I have seen since living here…more destruction of the irreplaceable Semiahmoo Spit. I frankly do not understand how this can be allowed in the only important bird area in Whatcom Area, one of the highest conservation areas in the county, an important habitat conservation area that should be protected under the GMA, and I am fairly confident that no compensatory mitigation is required. We are losing an important open field adjacent the water, an area used by migrating shorebirds and wintering sea birds and waterfowl and marine mammals to make way for more condos.

Among those profiting are members of the local development community. Realtor Mike Kent has his name prominently displayed on sales signs and notices. The proposal was submitted by a member of the Bellingham Planning Commission and is being built by a member of the county planning commission

Also of concern is the unstable geology of the land which will be developed. The spit is subject to flooding and erosion and lateral drift. It carries the risk of being cut off from the rest of the county during an emergency, The Fire Department has voiced serious concerns about the safety of living on the spit, which are not preventing this project from moving forward..

A wonderful opportunity to develop an area for ecotourism and show the rest of the county how it done has been lost forever.
