Few people I have spoken to are aware of this incredibly detailed petition on behalf of the Cherry Point herring to designate them as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. This was filed in 2004 by the Center for Biodiversity and several other NGO’s including People for Puget Sound and Friends of the San Juans.
Although the current coal export terminal was not at issue, the original GPT petition was, as was the GSX pipeline and the proposal to create a Cherry Point marine reserve. As a result this 12 year old document addresses many issues that are still relevant today. I have actually been meaning to do this for some time, so here it is today.
