It’s time we get the apology that Taylor Shellfish failed to offer when charges were originally brought against their company in September of 2016 for racial discrimination.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) found that former Taylor Shellfish employee Jeremy Daniels was called various racial slurs (noted in the EEOC press release linked to in the post) by his supervisor at Taylor Shellfish (based in Shelton and one of the largest producers of shellfish in the country) and was directed by management to ignore this discrimination.

From the EEOC 7-31-2017 Press Release:

“This case served as an appalling reminder of the challenges that black individuals continue to face in the United States,’ said EEOC Senior Trial Attorney Teri Healy. ‘Just last week, our office filed suit concerning racial harassment in nearby Oak Harbor, where the harassers used similar racially charged terms. We want to send a clear message to employers that this kind of behavior is inexcusable and must not be tolerated in the workplace.'”

“Nancy Sienko, Seattle field director for the EEOC’s San Francisco District, added, ‘Let us be clear: Employers must take swift action to end harassment. Employees who encounter similarly charged comments and stereotyping should know that the EEOC will investigate workplace abuses fully.'”

Additionally, here is a statement of denial of responsibility from Taylor Shellfish that was in a September 29, 2016 article in The Olympian announcing the lawsuit:

“Taylor Shellfish released a statement Thursday denying that the company was involved in illegal discrimination or retaliation.

“’Taylor Shellfish Farms is an equal opportunity employer and proud to have a diverse workforce. Fairness in the workplace is very important to us, and as such, we take discrimination allegations very seriously,’ the statement reads.”
