The Power of your Voice: Ferndale Donkey Basketball Controversy is Delivered across the Nation / Noisy Waters Northwest

February 19, 2016  Dena Jensen

When some Whatcom County citizens discovered it toward the end of the first week in February, people began to speak up in protest about the donkey basketball event scheduled at Ferndale High School in Washington on February 13, 2016 to benefit the local chapter of the Future Farmers of America.  By the ending of the second week, news of Ferndale school officials moving forward with the event despite opposition from animal advocates who were concerned for the welfare of the donkeys, spread from way up north in Washington state, across the continent, and all the way down south to Florida.

  1. Great article Dena! All these links to elsewhere in the country will be very useful with my letter writing and phone calling. This info is especially helpful since I just read that Superintendent Quinn has chosen to ignore her responsibility to the District and leave the final decision on future Donkey Basketball fundraisers to the HS kids in Ferndale. With no accountability, Superintendent Quinn has passed all responsibility for the outcome on to HS kids. I think that is what educators refer to as a teachable moment.
